READING · CLOZE OF PENICILLIN
The Birth of Penicillin

Fleming saw many soldiers die from infections(感染) in their wounds as he worked in a hospital during World War I. This made Fleming decide to find a way to help the body fight infections.

In September 1928, Fleming left some glass dishes on a bench in his laboratory for two weeks. When he came back, he noticed something puzzling. Bacteria(细菌) were growing on all the glass dishes except one. On this dish mould(霉菌) had started to grow - the kind found on old bread. The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing. Fleming called it "mould juice". He tried it on other bacteria, and it killed them, too. Fleming became wild with joy and named it penicillin.

Unfortunately, Fleming's boss thought he was wasting his time and it was impossible to kill bacteria at that time. Fleming did a few more experiments with penicillin, and he also wrote about it so other scientists could learn about it. However, because no one seemed interested in his discovery, he forgot about penicillin and started to work on other things.

In 1939, Ernest Chain, a scientist, and his boss, Howard Florey, were looking for medicines that could kill bacteria. They discovered Fleming's notes and decided to test penicillin. In 1940, they gave penicillin to some sick mice, who survived later. But those who didn't get it died. Florey declared: "It looks like a miracle!" By 1943, the final tests on humans were finished successfully and the world had its first antibiotic(抗生素) medicine.

1Fleming saw many soldiers die from infections in their wounds as he worked in a hospital during World War I.
see sb. do sth. 的时候";during World War I 一战期间。
句 2The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing.
that 引导定语从句,修饰 something;stop ... from doing 阻止……做某事;seem to be doing 似乎正在做某事。
1. Why did bacteria stop growing on one of the dishes?

A The mould juice killed them.(是"霉菌汁"杀死了它们。)

  • A 正确。原文第 2 段说 "The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing.

The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing.

2. Fleming had to give up his study on penicillin because ______.

D his boss didn't believe his new discovery(老板不相信他的新发现)

  • D(真题标准答案)。第 3 段 "Unfortunately, Fleming's boss thought he was wasting his time and it was impossible to kill bacteria at that time."(不幸的是,弗莱明的老板认为他在浪费时间,而且当时杀灭细菌是不可能的)。
第 3 段结尾 "However, because no one seemed interested in his discovery, he forgot about penicillin and started to work on other things."
3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

B The great work of Chain and Florey.(钱恩与弗洛里的伟大工作)

4. Which might be the best title of the text?

D The Birth of the World's First Antibiotic Medicine(世界第一种抗生素药物的诞生)

READING · A SMALL TASK, A BIG DIFFERENCE
Rita and the Ant

At the beginning of the school year, each student would be given a special job for which they would be responsible(负责任的) for the whole term. Rita, a quiet and hard-working girl, hoped for an exciting task, like taking care of the class plants. Instead, she received a small box with sand and a small ant.

Even though the teacher explained that this task was very special, Rita could not help feeling disappointed. However, she decided to do her best with her new job. She began to study and care for the ant, learning about its habitat(栖息地) and needs. She made the box a comfortable home for the ant, and it grew much bigger than anyone expected.

Rita's efforts caught the attention of her science teacher, Mr. Thompson. He turned her work into a class project, and Rita became the class expert(专家) on ants. Her hard work helped the whole class learn about ant behavior and habitats. They even built a small ant farm in the classroom to observe the ant closely.

Gradually, Rita's classmates became more and more interested in the ant project. They started asking her questions and observing the ant's behavior themselves. Rita organized a presentation where she shared her findings with the whole school during the science fair.

At the end of the year, Rita's class was recognized as the best of the year. Rita was as well praised for her hard work and how she turned a small task into something big. Rita learned that every task, no matter how small, could make a big difference. She also learned that sometimes the most unexpected things can lead to great success.

1At the beginning of the school year, each student would be given a special job for which they would be responsible for the whole term.
would be given 一般将来时的被动语态(过去将来时),"将被给予";for which 引导定语从句,which 指代 job,介词 for 来自 be responsible for;the whole term 整个学期。
句 2Rita was as well praised for her hard work and how she turned a small task into something big.
be praised for 因……受到表扬;how 引导宾语从句,与 her hard work 并列,共同作 for 的宾语;turn ... into ...
1. What was Rita's job this term?

B To raise an ant.(饲养一只蚂蚁)

第 1 段 "Instead, she received a small box with sand and a small ant."(然而她收到的是一个装着沙子和一只小蚂蚁的盒子),她的任务就是照看、饲养这只小蚂蚁。
照料班级植物(take care of the class plants)是她希望得到的任务,并非实际任务。
2. How did Rita feel about receiving the task at first?

第 2 段 "Rita could not help feeling disappointed."(蕾塔忍不住感到失望)。disappointed(失望的)≈ unhappy(不开心的),属于同义替换。
  • A 相反。
情感词同义替换表:disappointed ≈ unhappy / sad;excited ≈ wild with joy;calm ≈ relaxed。
3. What was the final result of Rita's special job?

A Her class became No. 1 of the year.(她的班级成为年度第一)

  • A 正确。末段 "At the end of the year, Rita's class was recognized as the best of the year."(年底,蕾塔的班级被评为年度最佳)。be recognized as the best of the year = became No. 1 of the year,正是"最终结果"。
(At the end of the year ...)。
4. What can we learn from Rita's story?

C A small task could make a big difference.(小任务也能产生大影响)

末段 "Rita learned that every task, no matter how small, could make a big difference."(每项任务无论多小,都能产生巨大影响)与 C 选项几乎原词复现,也是文章要传达的道理。

RESTORATION · BE MORE CONFIDENT
原文 · How to Be More Confident(点击空格可填入答案)

Confidence is very important. It can help you develop a healthy attitude(态度). But how can we be more confident? 1

Speak louder.

When you are not confident, you may speak in a voice so low that other people can hardly hear you. 2 Your voice can help you become more confident.

3

Taking exercise makes you tired, but relaxed. A strong body helps you be full of confidence.

Encourage yourself.

Write down a list of things you did during the day to see how many things you did well. Did you finish your homework on time? 4 Give yourself praise for the good things you have done.

Don't be afraid of failure(失败).

5 It will be easier for you to become more confident if you understand that. Try to start again and believe you can do better.

选项库
A. Play sports.
B. Failure is part of life.
C. Here are some suggestions.
D. Did you give your friends help?
E. Try to speak loud enough to make people hear you.
1When you are not confident, you may speak in a voice so low that other people can hardly hear you.
以至于……(结果状语从句);hardly 几乎不,本身表否定,不能再加 not;in a voice so low 用如此低的声音。
句 2It will be easier for you to become more confident if you understand that.
It is + 形容词 + for sb. + to do sth. Failure is part of life."
?);④ 看指代——that / them / such 指代的内容(第 5 空 that)。
But how can we be more confident? ______1______

C Here are some suggestions.(这里有一些建议。)

(Speak louder / Play sports / Encourage yourself / Don't be afraid of failure)——明显是分条给出的建议。

When you are not confident, you may speak in a voice so low that other people can hardly hear you. ______2______ Your voice can help you become more confident.

E Try to speak loud enough to make people hear you.(尽量说得足够大声,让别人能听见你。)

E 项中的 speak loud enough 与小标题呼应,make people hear you 与前句 hardly hear you 形成"问题 → 解决办法"的衔接,话题完全一致。

Taking exercise
______3______ / Taking exercise makes you tired, but relaxed. A strong body helps you be full of confidence.

下文讲 Taking exercise(锻炼)与 A strong body(强健的身体),A 项 Play sports(做运动)正是对这一段内容的概括。

Did you ... ?
Did you finish your homework on time? ______4______ Give yourself praise for the good things you have done.

D Did you give your friends help?(你帮助过朋友吗?)

解析

Did you finish your homework on time?",D 项同样是 Did you ...?

Don't be afraid of failure. ______5______ It will be easier for you to become more confident if you understand that.

B Failure is part of life.(失败是生活的一部分。)

解析

后句 "if you understand that"(如果你明白那一点)中的 that 指代空格处的句子。 Don't be afraid of failure"(不要害怕失败)话题一致、逻辑顺畅。
